The "Ruling Elite" faces charges of crimes against humanity

CAMBODIA:
Ruling Elite's crimes against humanity revisited

Contributors: Dr. Gaffar Peang-Meth
Cambodians' dissatisfaction with the country's direction is well-documented. Displeasure with the ruling Cambodian People's Party's rule is coupled with frustration that the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party leaders have failed to control the CPP – one reason for an outgrowth of small parties likely to split votes from the CNRP in 2018.
Premier Hun Sen and his CPP relish seeing frustration turn to criticism (even denunciation) of the CNRP for joining the National Assembly. Critics believe the CNRP should not deal with devil—the CPP. Thaem neak thaem (Encore!), one can hear the shrewd and foxy Premier and his CPP colleagues snicker. With executive, legislative, and judicial powers concentrated in their hands, they quash dissent and violate citizens' rights.

Cambodia

Protesters holding lotuses shout during demonstration, calling Cambodia's National Assembly to release peaceful protesters who have been detained, in Phnom Penh
The past year saw determined and often-violent efforts by the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) to suppress mass protests against the deeply flawed July 2013 parliamentary elections, and force the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), to accept the election results, and end its boycott of the National Assembly. The government imposed bans on peaceful protests, including strikes by trade unions campaigning for increased wages. In some cases, protesters engaged in attacks in response to security force repression.
